Central Coast Animal Massage Spring 2010 Newsletter
Dear Animal Lovers:
So sorry that my newsletter has not been available for reading. But here we go onto our "Almost Spring" newsletter! In this newsletter I am going to give you some simple thoughts about massage and your animal companions. Please call me if you have any questions. I am always available to take your call or return the call within 24 hours.
Most dogs and cats love massage and there are a number of positive effects a massage can give to your dog or cat and also to you.
Those of us who perform animal massage believe that massage provides many benefits to your animal's overall physical and emotional wellness.
If you are wondering if your dog or cat can benefit remember that all types of animals get massage therapy, race horses being one animal who really benefits from massage. Older dogs love massage since it enhances blood circulation and tones muscles. Puppies also do well with massage as their bones and muscles are continually changing. They also learn to accept human touch on various parts of their body, and learn to calm down. Massage helps animals who are recuperating from injury or surgery and may help shorten the recuperation time. Animals with emotional issues might find massaging effective in finding their inner tranquility. And of course massage is also great for our normal and healthy dogs and cats.
A question I often get is, "Are there any bad side effects to having my dog or cat get a massage?" The answer is NO! Unlike medicine, there are no side effects of massage, except that your dog or cat may learn to like it too much. (smile) I use a light touch where needed and a firm touch where needed. I listen and watch for cues from the animal.
Lastly, massages last from 30 minutes to an hour depending on the animal. Every one is different but I always leave the animal balanced before I leave the massage.
As part of the massage session I teach you, the parent how to give your animal a simple massage for in-between sessions and also to help you bond with your animal. Bonding takes place as you learn every part of your animal's body, getting closer to your animal both on a physical and a spiritual/emotional level.
Remember massage should be done where your animal feels most comfortable either your home or office. The first 15 minutes will be spent completing an "Massage Intake" form and inclues all the needed info regarding your dog or cat. A typical massage includes an overall massage, focusing on specific problem areas and range of motion stretches if appropriate.
Your dog or cat's body is filled with a type of energy called qi (chee), the energy flows along pathways and meridians in the body. This links all parts of the body together, such as the organs, skin, muscles and bones. The holistic belief is that when a pet gets sick, the natural flow of energy is out of balance. Massage and Acupressure can correct energy imbalances by pressing certain points located along the merdians in your dog or cat's body.
Many people ask me if massage is different from petting their dog or cat and to this I say YES! Massage extends many benefits beyond those of simple petting. Massage is the manipulation of muscles and skin to promote increased circulation to all the organs and tissues in your animal's body. In massage I use many different hand positions and stokes along the muscles and joint structure of your animal, and utilize contolled pressure.
So I hope that some of the mystery of massage for animals have been brought to light. There is no mystery, it is just good practice.
